A publishing success story
Some books are simply vessels for art, while others, through their concept and craftsmanship, become works of art in their own right. Such is the case with “Artists in Their Studios” by Tea Sirbiladze. A book that invites readers into the intimacy and creative chaos of artists’ studios, whose graphic production has been executed with absolute precision and the highest level of craftsmanship.
The Exterior: Texture, Contrast and Architectural Elegance
The first encounter with the book is a statement of intent. It is presented in an impressive thread-sewn hardcover binding with a square spine, finished with black headbands that provide a timeless, impeccable touch.
The cover is wrapped in black Brillianta cloth. This material not only offers a sophisticated, tactile, and organic feel, but also serves as the perfect dark canvas for the cover’s defining feature: a deep blind deboss at the centre, designed to accommodate a printed sticker.
This detail creates a striking contrast: the matte, textured surface of the cloth meets the glossy polypropylene-laminated finish of the sticker, producing a three-dimensional “window” effect that immediately captures the eye and draws the viewer into the artist’s studio.
Photography takes centre stage
The Interior: Seamless Transition and Outstanding Photographic Reproduction
The journey into the book begins with elegant Papago Black endpapers, maintaining the chromatic consistency of the exterior while preparing the reader for the visual experience within.
The 128 interior pages are printed on Symbol Tatami White, a premium coated paper highly regarded in art publishing for its substantial feel, silky texture, and exceptional ability to reproduce photographs with remarkable detail while minimising unwanted glare.
Printing technology: Mastering black
For a photography book, colour accuracy and tonal contrast are essential. For this project, the images were processed using UCR (Under Colour Removal). This prepress technique reduces excess ink coverage in the darkest areas, producing deep, clean blacks rich in tonal detail without filling in shadow information.
In addition, the entire interior was produced using 100% eco-friendly LED UV printing technology. This process cures the ink instantly on the Tatami paper, ensuring vibrant colour reproduction, eliminating the risk of offsetting, and providing an environmentally responsible printing solution.
The result:
Artists in Their Studios perfectly demonstrates how carefully selected materials and advanced printing technology can elevate a photographic publication. A true collector’s edition, where the warmth of traditional cloth binding exists in perfect harmony with the precision of state-of-the-art UV printing.
